Apples and walnuts are common ingredients for cakes. An apple walnut upside-down cake topped with nuts, fresh fruit, ice cream, dessert syrups, or fruit-flavored syrups.

Upside-down cakes can provide a wonderful treat in the afternoon or in the evening. In the past, this cake was baked and topped with pineapples which provided a deep moistness. The moistness allowed the upside-cake to remain fresh and tasty for up to a week when properly stored.

Upside-down cakes reached incredible popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. However, the 21st century has created a demand for good home-made cakes and an apple walnut upside-down cake can be a great option for brunch or dinner.

Also, an apple walnut upside-down cake can be topped with a variety of ingredients such as nuts, fresh fruit, ice cream, dessert syrups, and fruit-flavored dessert syrups.

Apple Walnut Upside-Down Cake Recipe

Preparation and Cooking Time: 60 minutes

Serves: 10

Ingredients:

  • light vegetable oil cooking spray
  • 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, toasted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 11/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp. salt

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Lightly coat a 9-inch square pan with cooking spray.
  2. Pour melted butter into pan. Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar over melted butter before sprinkling the apples and walnut over the brown sugar mixture.
  3. Use a large bowl to whisk together eggs and oil; Use a medium bowl to mix the flour, sugar, powder, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Slowly spread the cake batter over the apple-walnut sugar mixture.
  5. After spreading the cake batter, bake the apple-walnut batter combination for 45 minutes or until a wooden pick or table fork inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cake to cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack.
  7. Place a platter or a large plate on the top of the cake.
  8. Invert cake pan and remove pan. Serve warm or at room temperature.

  • Adds crunchiness. Toast the nuts and finely chop to enhance their flavor.
  • Use pistachios, pecans, or peanuts.

Fresh fruit

  • Summer fruit: fresh blackberries and apricots.

  • Winter fruit: Bosc pears.
  • Spring fruit: figs and currants.

Ice cream
